Is the Jacobite train running?
After the clashes between West Coast railways and the Jacobite steam train, the train is back in commission and running its usual scheduling throughout the year. That means all Harry Potters fans can rejoice!
What time does the train run?
The train only runs one service from Thursday 28th March until the summer season. This means you can catch it once coming from Fort William across the viaduct and once more coming from Mallaig. This is important as you will have to know what side of the viaduct the train crosses, to ensure you have the best viewing experience.
From Monday the 6th May to Friday the 27th September 2024 the train runs two services, from Fort William the first train runs from 10:15am, the second at 12:50pm. With the first train arriving at Mallaig and 12:26, and the second at 15:06. The Hogwarts express then departs Mallaig at the morning service at 14:10, and the afternoon service during the summer season at 17:00.

2024 TIMETABLE
Timings | Morning | Afternoon |
Departing Fort William | 10:15 | 12:50 |
Arrive Mallaig | 12:26 | 15:06 |
Departing Mallaig | 14:10 | 17:00 |
Arrive Fort William | 16:03 | 18:52 |
Please note that although the services are currently the same seven days a week, the railways can change the Saturday timings and it's important to keep update on the official West Coast railways page.
When does the Hogwarts train go across the viaduct?
The first service:
Fort William --> Viaduct between 10:50-11:30 --> Mallaig
Mallaig --> Viaduct between 3 and 3:30pm --> Fort William
(During our Visit, the train crossed the bridge at 3:17).
The Second service:
Fort William --> Viaduct between 1:30-2:10 --> Mallaig
Mallaig --> Viaduct between 17:40-18:20 --> Fort William
These times are all approximate and it's important to arrive early and use the West Coast railways website to ensure correct passing times as they can change.
When to get there?
I would suggest arriving 30 to 40 minutes early before the train is scheduled to cross the platform, as there is a short hike to the viaduct alongside a beautiful river. Additionally, if you wish for the best view, there is a short incline walk either on the left hand side of the viaduct or the right hand side. These areas fill up quickly as lots of Harry Potter fans wish to see the magic come to life!
Where to Park?
Glenfinnan visitor centre has a car park where you can park both cars and vans, for £3-6. I believe it is free for members of the National Trust of Scotland.
Additionally, they have toilets, a museum, and a souvenir shop on site after you have seen the impressive steam train roll on by!
What a place, would love to go and view the viaduct, when the train crosses over.
awesome stuff
